About this event

This is a one day guided outing for fishing the Hex Hatch at Lake Almanor near Chester, CA.  While there will be only one day of guided fishing on Saturday, June 28, the plan/hope is people can stay longer and fish more days (I'd like to do that) on our own.  Hopefully, what we learn from Lance Gray, our guide on the 28th, will allow us to fish the Hex hatch successfully on subsequent days.

Participants will meet Lance on the west side of Lake Almanor at 2:00 PM on June 28.  Lance will show us around access points on the west side of the lake and how to fish those access points.  After that, we'll go to Lance's place where we'll rig our gear and float tubes/pontoon boats, then we'll enjoy a tri-tip dinner prepared by Lance.  After the early dinner, we'll we'll go to the lake and fish with Lance's coaching from about 5/6 PM until about 9:30, just after dark, to take full advantage of the twilight Hex hatch.  Lance can provide some flies, but you should bring your own gear.  Lance recommends a 9-9.5' 5-7 weight rod, a WF floating line, and a few sinking/sink tip lines, particularly an intermediate and type 3 sinking lines, 7.5' 3X leaders, 3-5x tippet, and a deep-water indicator system (break away indicator and indicator leader).  You'll also need a watercraft of some kind, like a float tube, pontoon,  or small pram.  We won't be fishing far offshore.  You'll also need fins, a PFD, a light of some sort for fishing to a little after dark (head lamp, etc.) and all your usual lake fishing accessories.  While Lance will have some flies, you should plan to bring an assortment of Hex flies (nymph, emerger, and dry) as well as other stillwater flies which work well at the lake.  For more information, you can visit Lance's website, and specifically the web page about the Hex tour via the following link:

https://www.lancegrayandcompany.com/tours-1

The cost of the guided day is $175 per person if we have 3 attendees or $130 if we have 4 attendees.  When you sign up, you'll be billed $175, but a credit will be made if we have 4 attendees.   Tips to Lance can be made at your discretion.  Once you register, refunds can be made only if your slot is taken by someone else, or if the outing is cancelled.  We need a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 registered participants for this guided outing.  If the number of registrants is too small, the event will likely be cancelled and you'll be issued a club credit.

If you need accommodations for the outing, there are a number of campsites near Lake Almanor, such as Rocky Point (PG&E), Almanor North and South campgrounds, Plumas Pines Resort, etc, as well as various AirBNB type rental options.  All participants are responsible for their own accommodations; however, if you let me know, perhaps we can work together to book something so all participants are in a similar location.

Enjoy this learning and fishing opportunity on a great local stillwater fishery.   If you have questions about registration, contact me (tompolinger@gmail.com
