This is a one-day clinic for nymphing the Truckee River in Nevada. The Clinic Lead is Mike Curtis of Bucking Trout Outfitters. Mike frequently guides and fishes the Truckee River in Nevada. The day will consist of exploring access points on the river, discussing rigging, flies, and nymphing techniques (Euro and Indicator) and practicing by fishing one or more sections of the river. There will be a lunch break; you should plan on bringing your own lunch, drinks, a chair, and any snacks you want for the day.
Participants will meet Mike on Saturday, November 16, at 9:00 AM at the Lockwood Park in Sparks, NV (exit 22 off I80 East). After a brief introduction, review of the day’s schedule, and a check of participant fishing licenses (you must have a valid Nevada fishing license which is available for purchase on-line), the group will explore access and fishing points on the Truckee River in the area. Participants will need to follow Mike in their cars (you can carpool if you want, of course). There will be discussion of rigging, flies, and techniques, followed by fishing one or more sections of the river to practice nymphing. Around mid-day, there will be a lunch break, after which the clinic will continue with instruction from Mike and fishing the river about 3:30-4:00 PM. Participants should bring their own fishing gear for indicator fishing and/or Euro Nymphing: rod, reel, floating line, leader, 3-5X tippet, flies, waders/boots, net, etc., and your usual accessories. Obviously, for fishing in the winter you will want to dress warmly with clothes that will keep you dry. Fly patterns that are effective at this time of the year include Zebra Midges (#16-22), small, dark mayfly nymph patterns (PTN, Hare’s Ear, etc.) in about #14-18, San Juan worms, and Perdigons and similar Euro-nymphs, and BWO mayfly dries in sizes #14-18.
The cost of the Clinic is $155 per person. Tips to Mike can be made at your discretion. Once you register, refunds can be made only if your slot is taken by someone else. We need a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 registered participants for this Clinic. If the number of registrants is too small, the Clinic will be deferred or cancelled. If the Clinic fills and we have more interest from our members, we’ll see if we can arrange another Clinic at another time. Since this is a winter outing, it is weather dependent and if weather conditions are too severe it may be necessary to reschedule. Thank you for your understanding, and enjoy this learning opportunity on our premier local fishery. If you have questions about registration, contact Greg Cater (gcater4@gmail.com), if you have specific questions about equipment, meeting time/place, etc., contact Mike directly at mike@buckingtrout.com or (775)-997-3673.
