About this event
Pyramid opens on October 1 and the first couple weeks of the season is often excellent fishing. This is a multi-day trip with camping at the lake. Lodging options are available at Pyramid Lake Lodge in Sutcliffe or hotels in Sparks/Reno. Come out for one day or all of them!
We will plan to camp at Warrior Point and will fish there as well as at Monument Beach. The camp is boon docking (no water or other hookups) with pit toilets. There is some grassy area.
October is float tube/pontoon boat time at Pyramid. The fish are in 15 to 65 feet of water chasing Tui-Chub and fatting up fast. Fly fishing in those depths requires some special techniques which will be shared with anyone new to the game. In addition, anyone new to Pyramid will receive instruction on how to rig your equipment, fly selection, casting, retrieves and fishing safely from a tube at the big lake.
Proper equipment:
- 6 to 9 weight rods, with a fast sinking shooting head (preferred) or full sink line. A floating line will REQUIRE break away indicators to fish 15 plus feet deep (difficult). Sink tip or intermediate sink lines will not get the job done.
- a float tube or pontoon boat, best if equipped with a depth finder
- waders, boots, fins
- a personal floatation device (a very good idea for Pyramid)
- leader/tippet material in 12# to 15# (yes, that heavy!)
You will need a fishing permit ($24/day) and, if camping a camping permit ($32/day-night) from the Paiute Tribe. They are available online at https://plpt.nagfa.net/online/. No Nevada license is required. Boats with motors also require a boating permit. Fishing regulations can be found here https://pyramidlake.us/fishing.
