This is a single day group fish event at Lake Davis, near Portola, California. We will meet at approximately 8:30 AM, the exact time and location will be communicated closer to May 19.

You can fish from shore at Lake Davis, however, a pontoon boat, float tube, kayak, or small boat/ pram will help you cover more water and fish more effectively. The usual Stillwater fly gear will work fine, typically 5-6 weight rods of 9-10’ length with a variety of lines, including a floating line and various sinking or sink tip lines for subsurface presentations. Flies that are effective at this time of year include midges in sizes #12-16 in various colors, pheasant tail, hares ear, or similar nymphs in #12-16 to imitate callebaetis mayflies, leeches/damsels/wooly buggers and other similar streamers (olive, brown/rust, burnt orange, and black all work) in #6-12, snail patterns, ants, and a number of other attractor patterns. The lake can be windy with white-cap waves, particularly on spring afternoons; you may want to bring an anchor for your watercraft and, of course, exercise care in how far from shore you fish.

If you’d like to fish more than one day, there are several campsites near the lake (Grizzly Campground, Lightening Tree Campground, Grasshopper Flat, and private camping via the Grizzly store) as well as hotels near the lake and in the town of Portola about 6 miles away. There is no fee for this group-fish. Bring your own lunch, water, and any other food/personal items you will need. You might want to bring a folding chair for lunch.
