The club added Manzanita Lake to our Groupfish schedule this year and the trip over the June 10 weekend was a great time.  Twenty members/spouses made the trip to the beautiful Lassen National Park for four days of fishing, hiking, camping and camaraderie.  We had an outstanding tri-tip dinner on Saturday night – see the Monthly Special below for the marinade recipe.  It is my favorite.  These are all wild fish so it was technical fishing but the reward was beautiful brown and rainbow trout.

I am looking forward to our next GroupFish to the lovely Milton Reservoir on July 9.  This little gem is set in the canyon below Jackson Meadows Reservoir.  It receives water from the bottom of Jackson Meadows so it is always cold even in the height of summer.  In other words, plan to wear some fleece under your waders!  There are lots of browns with midges, ants, beetles, buggers and other lake fare usually working.  They are not big fish, so this is a good spot for your 4 or 5 weight rods.  A float tube or pontoon is required.

Your board is working on making the 32nd Annual BBQ and Fundraiser set for Saturday, August 13 the best ever.  Chef Paul Dillon is planning his outstanding grilled salmon and chicken lunch with sides, salads and dessert.  Larry Heywood has arranged for Jeff Putnam, renown casting instructor, to give demonstrations on both single and two handed rods, the raffle committee is gathering lots of great swag for the raffle – including a couple of rods and reels, chest packs, fanny packs and tons of items.  Adamsbuilt, a fairly local manufacturer from Fernley, NV will be on site to show us their wares.  We will be at the Truckee River Regional Park at the River Pavilion from 10:30 am to 4 pm.  Tickets are $30 paid at the gate, but please pre-register (click HERE) so we have a count for food purchases.  Please consider volunteering to help at the BBQ too.

Manzanita Lake Groupfish – Weekend of June 10

The Groupfish was a great time as usual.  Twenty members attended from Thursday to Sunday at beautiful Lassen National Park.  The lake is managed for wild trout and includes mainly browns with some rainbows.  The club used a variety of methods to catch – from dries to nymphs to streamers.  Saturday night’s group dinner was a hit with marinated tri-tips as the main course.  Everyone brought great dishes to go along, including Dean’s now famous fried zucchini, mushrooms and French fries.  For those not fishing, the hiking was terrific through Lassen’s volcanic terrain.  

TTFF Youth Fly Fishing Program – Best Yet!

The 11th Annual Cliff Frazier Youth Fly Fishing Program sold out again this year.  The group of 12 kids were very serious about learning and the club volunteers had a great time teaching.  All of the kids caught fish over the 2 days on the river at the San Francisco Fly Casting Club (SFFCC).  SFFCC also provided terrific lunches for everyone.  Their partnership has become central to this outstanding event.  

Next year’s event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20 through Thursday, June 22.  

Milton Lake GroupFish, July 9

The Club is going to return to Milton Lake on Saturday, July 9.  Milton is an afterbay to Jackson Meadows reservoir about an hour north of Truckee.  It is a relatively small lake that is a prolific trout fishery because it gets cold water from the bottom of Jackson Meadows just above it.  It is very float tube friendly with both dry fly and nymphing available.  Click HERE to sign up and HERE to see who is going.

                         

TTFF’s ‘Day on the River’, July 23

Our Day on the River returns this year.  This is an introduction to Fly Fishing covering everything from how to string your rod to knots to bugs to flies to casting and reading the water.  It is open to the public as a membership drive event and also to beginners in the club.  We typically meet at the Glenshire bridge area.  More information will follow.  If you would like to sign up to attend or to volunteer to help with the class, Click HERE.  See who else has signed up HERE.

TTFF Moving Water Workshop – Wednesday, July 20

This is a TTFF Sponsored event for anglers wanting to hone their skills on streams and rivers.  We have arranged for veteran fly fishing guide and Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishers member Jon Baiocchi to lead an all-inclusive introduction on how to approach fly fishing on Freestone Rivers. The location for the workshop will be located on the North Fork Yuba River, a magnificent watershed that is very beautiful, and has a high population of wild rainbow trout, with the occasional brown trout.  Click HERE to learn more about Jon.

Topics covered will include equipment requirements, rigging for surface and sub surface presentations, knots, casting mechanics, entomology, fly selection, reading water, and proper handling and safely releasing trout. Handouts on entomology, flies, and a map included.

The North Fork Yuba is the best classroom for the aspiring fly angler. You’ll have a very good chance of hooking into a wild trout, and gain the confidence to fish and explore the Sierra and other waters on your own!

TTFF 31st Annual BBQ and Fundraiser, August 13

Our premier event of the summer!  Saturday, August 13 is the day of our big event at the Truckee River Regional Park.  Chef Paul Dillon will be preparing outstanding grilled salmon and chicken with side dishes, appetizers and dessert.  Water and soft drinks are included, bring your adult beverage of choice.  Jeff Putnam, master casting instructor, will demonstrate and discuss both conventional and spey casting, Fire in the Kitchen will return with live music and, of course we will have our massive raffle.  The cost is $30 and will be collected at the door.  To help us plan, please pre-register for the event by clicking HERE.  Pre-registered attendees will be entered in the door prize drawing for $100 at The Lodge at Tahoe Donner, $50 at The Fly Shop and $50 of Tahoe Donner Mountain Money.  It takes a big effort to make this happen, so please consider volunteering for a role as you register.

Virginia Lakes Groupfish – Weekend of August 26

The GroupFish to the Lower Sacramento River in April was so successful; we scheduled another one for next year with a new twist.  We have arranged a special trip through Lance Gray & Company to rent the Digger Creek Ranch (http://diggercreekranch.com/) for the trout opener on April 30 and May 1.  This property is located near Manton, CA.  It has 3 stocked lakes and a short section of Digger Creek to fish.  The house has four bedrooms and 5 baths and sleeps 8.  There is a full kitchen.  We can also accommodate a few campers with up to 8 additional anglers.  Then on May 2, we have 5 drift boats reserved with Lance and his crew on the Lower Sacramento.  

The costs for the trip are as follows: (fishing and accommodations).

Reservations will be separate for Digger Creek and the Float – you can do one or the other or both.  A deposit of 50% will be required to hold your space.  Lance has a refund policy up to 30 days ahead but most likely, we would be able to fill your spot from the waiting list.  Click HERE to sign up.  Click HERE to see who is going.

Special Feature – Tri-Tip Recipe

As promised, here is the recipe for the Tri-tip at the Manzanita Lake dinner.

Shiraz-Soy Tri-Tip

Wine:  A fruity Shiraz or Syrah (the same grape) with a hint of sweet pipe tobacco smoke

1 beef tri-tip (about 2 1/2 pounds) fat trimmed, rinsed and patted dry

3/4 cup Shiraz wine

2/3 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1/4 cup lemon juice

2 tablespoons Worcestershire

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic

1.     In a gallon size zip lock plastic bag, combine Shiraz, soy sauce, oil, vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire, mustard, and garlic.  Add ti-tip and seal bag.  Chill at let 2 hours or up to 1 day, turning occasionally.

2.     Lightly oil barbecue grill over a solid bed of medium coals or medium heat on a gas grill (you can hold your hand at grill level only 4 to 5 seconds).  Lift tri-tip from marinade and lay on hot grill; discard marinade.  Close lid on gas grill.  Cook tri-tip, turning every 5 minutes, until rare in center of thickest part (still pink; cut to test), 125 to 130 degrees on a thermometer, about 25 minutes or until as done as you like.

3.     Let meat rest 15 minutes, then cut across the grain into thin, slanting slices.

Notes: Brush some of the marinade on bell peppers and onions; grill them next to the meat for about 15 minutes (stop brushing on marinade at least 5 minutes before veggies are done, so heat can kill any bacteria from meat.)
